Has Your Cheese
Recently Been Moved?

September, 2001
Vol. 3, No. 9

If so, what are you going to do about it? If the "New Economy" has taught us anything so far, it's that change is a given and the prosperous survivors are those who remain alert and adaptable. The handwriting is on the wall, but have you paused long enough to read it?

I recently read "Who Moved My Cheese?" by Spencer Johnson, M.D. If you haven't read it yet, I'd like to recommend that you set aside an hour which is all the time you'll require to get through this little gem of a book. It's insightful, and it's fun to read.

The gist of Johnson's tale is that today's workforce can't assume that the job they hold today will be around tomorrow. Neither can they assume that the way they work today will be what is called for next year.

Darwin's theory is alive and well in corporate America, and only those who can evolve will survive. "So," you say, "what else is new? Change has always been a constant theme throughout the centuries." True enough, but it's how we personally choose to deal with change that merits special contemplation today.

Some of the questions Dr. Johnson asks you to consider:

  • Do you understand the difference between activity and productivity?
  • Are you repeating past behaviors and wondering why things aren't improving, while continuing to achieve the same old results?
  • What is fear of change costing you?
  • What would you do if you weren't afraid?

Many of you have already found it necessary to effect some major changes in your life. You may have been downsized, reorganized, outsourced, or made redundant, as they say in Australia. Some of you have noticed and read the handwriting on the wall, but are hesitant about making a move. A word of caution: if you hesitate too long, someone other than you will decide what your future will be.

There's plenty of tastier cheese available to be eaten, but first we have to find the courage to move in new directions. Don't let fear of change cost you your future!

Bob Dylan said it well in 1963:
"You'd better start swimming or you'll sink like a stone/
for the times they are a-changing."

Take a moment now to jump in the water and swim on over to my Resources page for suggestions on how to start doing things differently. If you haven't been achieving the results you want, these books will provide ideas for organizing your work and optimizing your time-management skills.

From time to time we all get stuck in a rut and may habitualize ineffective, non-productive systems. You are not alone. I work with highly successful business people who are successful, in part, because they know when to seek out help. If you're stuck and require some fresh ideas, You Need Me!

"Embrace Change - While You Still Can."

Let me help you get organized to become more "Life-Agile."

All the best,
