Time Management is more than just being productive |
July, 2001
Vol. 3, No. 7 |
Becoming better organized and practicing good time-management skills are excellent goals. The reward for achieving these goals, however, should NOT simply be more to organize and more to accomplish. |
|
A well-managed calendar provides daily time to downshift into present-centered, health-enhancing, life-affirming activities; time to reconnect with your inner self and nature; silent breaks that allow you to be alone with your thoughts, your feelings and your breath.
As a holistic organizing consultant, teaching my clients effective organization and time management skills is only half of my job. I assist individuals in discovering that there's more to life than efficiently completing project after project, checking off To-Do's, and cramming as many productive tasks into each day as possible.
The great pianist, Arthur Rubinstein, was asked by an admirer: How do you handle the notes as well as you do? His answer was, "I handle the notes no better than many others, but the pauses - ah, that is where the art resides." |
Holistic Suggestion:
You can begin to rediscover the art in your life and work by scheduling daily pauses or "mini vacations" on your calendar. The word vacation comes from the Latin vacare, which means "to be empty." (My high school Latin teacher would be so pleased to know I actually learned something in her class!)
Pull out your calendar and for each day block out a 15-minute "vacation" break designed to empty your mind. These retreats may at first seem unnatural and cause you to feel a tad anxious. With continued practice, however, you will discover that slowing down your pace and focusing on nothing but your breath will renew your energy. Try your best to do this for 30 days because that is about how long it takes to form a new habit.
These silent breaks can actually promote solutions to problems and worries. Slow your pace, shift your rhythm, and give yourself time to just BE. If you make this a daily practice, you'll find that when your annual two-week vacation rolls around you won't waste the first two days relearning how to gear down from your usual hectic pace! |

Happy vacare to all my readers. I will be following my own advice by taking a vacation in San Diego at the end of July and skipping the August newsletter. Between now and September 1st, I plan to start writing a book I've been mentally entertaining for some time.
See you in September!
All the best,
